Canilao et al v. City Commercial Investments, LLC
Plaintiffs had each contributed a mural to the exterior of the Stud, the oldest continuously operating queer bar in San Francisco. When the business closed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the owners of the business allegedly notified defendants that if the building was to be demolished, community members were interested in saving, preserving and moving the facade. Plaintiffs alleged that Defendants painted over their murals in violation of the Visual Artists Rights Act (VARA).
