November 13, 2019 Opinion or Order ORDER denying #7 Motion for Leave to Appear Pro Hac Vice -- Stephanie Strickler is an attorney who is admitted to practice in the State of Illinois and who has applied to be admitted pro hac vice on behalf of the defendants in the instant case pursuant to Local Civil Rule 1.3(c). See Docket Entry #7 . She is not admitted to practice before this court. For the reasons set forth below, I deny the motion without prejudice to renewal upon a showing that such admission is appropriate under the circumstances. Ms. Strickler practices law in Illinois, where she is a member of the firm Messer Strickler, Ltd. Ms. Strickler has been admitted pro hac vice in at least eight cases in this district since July 2018. See Shimonov v. Frontline Asset Strategies, LLC, et al., 18-CV-6719 (ENV) (ST); Nunez v. TrueAccord Corp., 19-CV-0583 (AMD) (RML); Zheng v. Mandarich Law Group, LLP, 19-CV-1626 (FB) (RER); Hochhauser v. Grossman & Karaszewski, PLLC, 19-CV-2468 (ARR) (CLP); Solovyova v. Grossman & Karaszewski, PLLC, 19-CV-2996 (KAM) (VMS); Felberbaum v. Mandarich Law Group, LLP, 19-CV-4249 (KAM) (VMS); Fritz v. LVNV Funding, LLC, et al., 19-CV-5255 (ENV) (PK); Peragine v. William C. Grossman Law PLLC, 17-CV-5901 (JMA) (AYS). Ms. Strickler has been admitted to appear on behalf of several different clients in these cases. It thus appears that Ms. Strickler regularly engages in the practice of law in this district. Yet by routinely gaining admission pro hac vice rather than taking the steps necessary to join the bar of this court, Ms. Strickler remains immune to much of the disciplinary oversight to which her colleagues are subjected. See Loc. Civ. R. 1.5(b)-(c). This court routinely grants attorneys who practice elsewhere the courtesy of representing clients who find themselves involved in litigation in this court. But "[a]dmission pro hac vice is by definition, at most, admission for a single proceeding." In re Rappaport, 558 F.2d 87, 88 n. 1 (2d Cir. 1977). It is a privilege rather than a right, see Leis v. Flynt, 439 U.S. 438, 44142, 99 S.Ct. 698, 58 L.Ed.2d 717 (1979), and one that should not be abused. If Ms. Strickler intends to continue representing defendants Darleen Karaszewski, William C. Grossman, PLLC, and Grossman & Karaszewski, PLLC, or other clients in this court, she can and should secure the admission to our bar. If, on the other hand, Ms. Strickler can demonstrate that her many applications for admission pro hac vice represent an aberration in her normal practice, and that she does not anticipate making future similar applications on a routine basis, then I will of course grant her the same courtesy that is routinely afforded to out-of-state counsel in their occasional visits to this district. Ordered by Magistrate Judge James Orenstein on 11/13/2019. (Walker, Anna)
